Writing Music Therapy Treatment Plans
through a neurodiversity-affirming lens
About the course
The Neurodiversity-Affirming Care model is a framework built with the understanding that differences in brain types and abilities are natural, normal, and perhaps even beneficial to an optimally functioning society. This model was developed in response to the way the deficit and medical models of care tend to discount disabled and neurodivergent peoples' strengths and dehumanize or pathologize their differences. Neurodiversity-Affirming care encourages advocacy, acceptance, and inclusivity, and aims to support disabled or neurodivergent clients in a way that isn't meant to change or hide their disabilities or differences. This course is meant to offer music therapists concrete and actionable guidelines for making their work more Neurodiversity-Affirming, and specifically discusses ways to reflect the pillars of this model into written treatment plans, including goals, objectives, and progress notes.
